GARDENWOOD FOUNDER

Melissa Watson-Clark, LCSW-C

Picture
I'm Melissa Watson-Clark, a Licensed Certified Social Worker-Clinical (LCSW-C) with more than 20 years of experience in clinical practice.

For more than two decades, I've sat across from intelligent, capable women who are carrying more than anyone realizes.
On the surface, they're holding it together. They're responsible, accomplished, dependable. But privately, they feel stuck in patterns that no longer make sense, and no longer fit.

And if I'm honest, I understand that tension. Midlife is not just a season of change, it's often a season of reckoning. The identity that once worked no longer fits as comfortably. What used to feel clear starts to feel constricting.

Over time, I began to notice something consistent in my work. Insight alone does not create lasting change.

The women I worked with were thoughtful and self-aware. They could explain their patterns. They understood where they came from. And yet, the same struggles kept resurfacing.

What became clear to me is this:

Most change efforts focus on behavior when the real driver is belief.

That realization reshaped how I practice. It also led me to develop the Belief Reconstruction Framework, a structured clinical methodology that guides clients through a deliberate process of identifying, examining, and reconstructing the belief systems that organize their lives.

My Background

My clinical training is grounded in evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, schema therapy, and motivational interviewing. The Belief Reconstruction Framework draws on current research in cognitive neuroscience and the psychology of identity change.

Before founding Gardenwood Counseling Center, I held progressive clinical leadership roles including work with the Baltimore City Department of Social Services. I later contributed to the training infrastructure at the University of Maryland School of Social Work, where I trained more than 400 licensed professionals in evidence-based practice.

I hold a Master of Social Work from the University of Maryland School of Social Work (2002) and a Bachelor of Social Work from University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) (1998), along with a Graduate Certificate in Learning and Performance Technology from UMBC. I have developed and delivered continuing education trainings for licensed clinical professionals on the application of belief transformation techniques in therapeutic settings.

Today, my work centers on belief reconstruction: identifying the internal assumptions that shape identity, relationships, ambition, and self-worth, and carefully rebuilding what no longer serves you.

Our work is thoughtful, direct, and collaborative. I won't just listen and nod. I will help you see what's underneath the pattern and support you as you rebuild from there.

Clients often tell me they leave feeling steadier. Clearer. More grounded in their own decisions.

At this stage of my career, I care less about quick fixes and more about meaningful, structural change.

If you're ready for that kind of work, we may be a good fit.
